She perfected her art at the Sri Rajarajeshwari Bharata Natya Kala Mandir, Mumbai and is recognized as one of the finest exponents of the dance form. She is equally renowned for having introduced a contemporary idiom into Bharata Natyam and so, widening the frontiers of classical dance.

Jyotsna has choreographed many dance dramas, some purely classical ballets, others with contemporary themes. These include The Sound of Music, The Birth of Jesus, The Radha Chalisa, The Gita Govindam, Alice in Wonderland and Noddy in Nrityaland to name a few.
